Midway School

School District 76, known also as Midway School, was organized on May 24, 1883. It had been part of Alma District 2 and Orleans District 3. The schoolhouse was located on a corner of Conrad Boehler’s ranch (now the Jack Boehler farm) between Orleans and Alma.

The first teacher was Edith Slawson, In 1905-1906, Nellie Avery began teaching; she had 23 students. And in 1907-1908, Bertha Schumacher began teaching at a salary of $40 per month. She also also did all the janitorial work too.

Midway School’s last teacher was Charlotte Hoffman, who taught from 1946-1947.  A decade later, the district reintegrated into both Orleans and Alma districts.

In 1976, the Nebraska Bicentennial Commission made a grant of $1,000 to the Harlan County Historical Society for the purchase and restoration of the schoolhouse.
